Creating a Handmade Card Using a Sketch – Why Sketches Are So Helpful
Today I’m excited to share my newest handmade card project, created during Facebook Live for the Polish scrapbooking shop Zielone Koty.
For this project, I worked with one of their beautiful sketches — and it reminded me once again just how powerful and inspiring sketches can be in the creative process.
This card was created directly from the sketch, which provided a clear base for the composition while still leaving plenty of room for personal interpretation and creativity.
Why I Love Working with Sketches
Working with a sketch can be incredibly helpful, especially on days when we sit down at our craft table without a clear plan in mind. Instead of staring at supplies and wondering where to start, a sketch gives us direction and structure.
With a sketch:
- We already know how to build the layers
- The composition is planned for us
- It’s easier to focus on colours, textures, and details
- The creative process becomes more relaxed and enjoyable
The sketch acts as a guide, not a limitation. It helps organise ideas while still allowing freedom to add your own style.
A Great Way to Try Something New
Another thing I love about working with sketches is that they often encourage us to step outside our comfort zone.
By following a layout we might not normally choose, we can:
- Try new compositions
- Use different layering techniques
- Combine elements in unexpected ways
Sometimes a sketch leads us to creative solutions we wouldn’t have discovered on our own.
About This Card
For this project, I focused on texture, layered elements, and a soft, vintage-inspired colour palette. The sketch helped me balance all the elements while keeping the design cohesive and visually pleasing.
Creating this card live on Facebook was a wonderful experience, and I truly enjoyed sharing the process, tips, and inspiration with the creative community.
